Which states allow sweepstakes casinos
Sweepstakes play reaches most of the United States. The exceptions are consistent enough to fit on one page.
Where casinos will not take you
| State | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Washington | Out almost everywhere | State law treats online gaming, promotional play included, unusually strictly |
| Idaho | Out almost everywhere | Sweepstakes rules read as covering the two-currency model |
| Michigan | Out at several casinos | Regulated real-money market; casinos withdrew rather than test the overlap |
| Nevada | Out at several casinos | Gaming law and licensing exposure |
| Montana | Out at some casinos | Narrow definition of permitted promotions |
Where sweepstakes casinos are available
Outside those five, sweepstakes play is generally open to adults who meet the casino’s age requirement, eighteen at most, twenty-one at some. Availability is set casino by casino rather than by any central register, so two casinos can take opposite views of the same state.
Prizes are taxable income. Casinos issue a 1099-MISC above the federal reporting threshold and state treatment varies. We are not tax advisers and this is not tax advice; a large payout is worth a conversation with someone who is.
If you travel, location is usually checked at login rather than at signup. Playing from an excluded state on a trip can freeze an account mid-payout.
Why a state can be excluded
When a casino in this listing refuses your state, one of two things is happening and they behave very differently.
Sometimes it is state law. A short list of states treat promotional sweepstakes with casino style games as regulated gambling, or impose consumer rules that make the model unworkable. No casino will take you there and trying another one will not help.
More often it is the operator being careful. A legal team reads an unclear statute strictly and the state goes on the blocklist even though competitors accept it. This is why two casinos can give you opposite answers about the same state in the same week.
Which means a refusal is worth testing twice. Try a second casino from the listing before concluding you cannot play, because the eighteen here do not share one blocklist.
Four things worth knowing
- Register with your real address
Not the one you wish you had. Registration will often accept a false address and the identity check will not, and the check happens at the exact moment you have a prize waiting.
- Leave the VPN off
Location tools flag it, and an account flagged for location is closed with the balance inside. No casino in this listing makes an exception.
- Update the address if you move
A mismatch between the account and your documents is the most common reason a first cash out stalls for days.
- Check on the day
State availability changes without announcement in both directions. The casino terms page on the day you sign up is the only version that binds anyone.
